During the 1960s and'70s, San Francisco's Winterland Arena was home to some of the era's most memorable rock concerts, hosting such musical legends as Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, concert photo rock and The Who. When the world-famous venue closed its doors in 1978, rock promoter Bill Graham commemorated the event by organizing one last farewell concert--and he chose his favorite band the Grateful Dead to bring the party to a rockin' close. I'm the captain, so climb aboard/ We'll search for tomorrow on every shore. It was the earnest mysticism of lyrics like these which put STYX on the radios of the 1970's. The proto prog rockers defined stadium rock for an entire generation of smiley face sporting teenagers. With their sweeping concept albums, ten minute long song epics, concert photo rock and virtuostic, overpowering guitar solos, STYX were everything that the raw, stripped-bare punk bands of the late Seventies were rebelling against. Still, they occupy an integral place in rock history concert photo rock and the poetic, metaphorical quality of their music continues to inspire concert photo rock and entertain millions. REO Speedwagon, contemporaries of STYX, are a prog-rock band with a similar sound concert photo rock and impact.
